Classes for Early Fall Term
6 week sessions beginning September 3, 2013
*cancelled this term* Cook with a Book and Creative Writing with Lego® StoryStarters: This class will meet on Monday Mornings from 9-12pm (after Labor Day). It is aimed at children elementary age and up. I meet children's abilities based on individual needs. This class really would go best with multiple ages. Some love cooking and decorating, others love doing author studies, and many enjoy writing their own stories, documentaries, reports, etc. The goal of this class is for children to find the own medium to express their love for books and writing, and to publish their work in a "class newspaper" which will lead to their work being published in a community newspaper if they desire to do so. The cost of the class is $50.00 for a six week session or $10.00 per class. Membership required. Drops in are acceptable as their projects begin when they start. Our Author Study for the first six weeks will be Laura Numeroff, and then we pick up with Joanna Cole author of The Magic School Bus series. Instructor: Tearri Rivers.
Primary Class: This is for children ages 3-6 years old. The class will meet on Tuesdays mornings from 9-11:30am. The students will be involved in various Montessori and Reggio Emilia inspired activities that will involve practical life, geography, sciences, math, language, art, music, and history. The cost for the six week sessions is $60.00 or $12.00 per class. Membership required. If you choose to pay per class or drop in you must preregister for the class at least 24 hours before the class meets. Instructor: Tearri Rivers.
Project Sewing: This class meets on Wednesdays from 1-3pm and for elementary children and up. Again sewing abilities are assessed and personal projects are welcomed by Ms. Rosemary the sewing instructor. She will help guide your child to become a confident sewer and will take them to the next level where ever they are in their sewing abilities. There are sewing projects available that include all the materials for your child for different levels, whether it is hand sewing or machine sewing. The cost for a six week session is $65.00 or $15.00 per class. Membership required. If you choose to attend certain classes you must preregister 24 hours before the class so there will be materials available for your child for the class. Instructor: Rosemary Miller.
*cancelled this term* The Animal Kingdom: This class meets on Thursday mornings from 9-11:30am. Shawn who has worked for Soldan's Pet Supplies for years will be the main facilitator for this class . During the first six week session the theme is "Pet Pals". Shawn will bring in a live animal, as he will at every session and teach the kids the care and keeping of the animals, as well as how to train the pet. It is all hands on fun! There will be learning centers available where the children will be able to learn more about the animal as well. After the first six weeks we delve into learning more about the Animal Kingdom. For every six weeks the child will learn more about the various animals that belong to each group. The cost is $45.00 or $10.00 per class. Membership required. Drop-Ins are encouraged, just call ahead to see what animal will be featured and let me know that you will be joining us. Instructor: Tearri Rivers.

Instructors
Tearri Rivers (Owner): I attended Eastern Michigan University. I have worked in a Special Education classroom as a Paraprofessional, as a Reading Tutor, and worked as a building substitute teacher for the same charter school here in Lansing. I also operated a licensed daycare/preschool and after school program in my home for 11 years, during this time I became a certified Montessori Primary guide. Also as a licensee it required me to attend numerous classes, and complete training hours in the areas of child development, and administration. My philosophy of education is that children learn best by doing things that they are interested in that they can apply to real life. All activities that I do with children incorporate problem/ project based learning.
Rosemary Miller the Sewing instructor has been teaching kids how to sew for the last 20+ years in her home. She loves for the kids to dive on in and believes sewing is learnt by doing and not done by lesson planning. Once she asks the child what it is that they would like to sew, she is ready to rock ' n' roll. She works right along with the kids motivating them by wearing her own outfits that she has hand sewed or machine sewn. Rosemary hopes to have a Sewing School of her own one day. Rosemary is also a talented wood burner, and has loads of skills with polymer clay.
Ellen Willis is a certified art teacher, very passionate about giving structured art classes to children who love art and who need guidance to take their talent to a higher level. Ellen also has experience as being an instructor on a Junior Lego League Team.
All instructors must complete criminal background checks, clearances from Child Protective Services, and finger prints taking to ensure that they are cleared through the State Police Department who then searches nationally for any matches for criminal convictions. In order for an instructor to be left alone with children when I am not in attendance they must also be certified in Infant/Child/Adult CPR as well as First Aid. All instructors demonstrate their competence through portfolio work, or by observation of them in a class. References are checked for credibility.
